INTRODUCTION

The CEID (Create, Experience, Inspire, and Design) STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics) Foundation (CSF) was founded with the belief that a country's long-term prosperity requires a collective commitment to excellence in STEM education and the development of scientific and technological talents at the primary and secondary school levels. We recognize that instilling STEM ideals at the foundational level of education is crucial for future development and economic growth.

Our leadership is dedicated to empowering underprivileged children with the fundamental concepts of STEM using STEM Resource Centers (SRC). We believe every Ghanaian child deserves access to high-quality STEM education, regardless of their social background or class.

To achieve our mission, we partner with like-minded corporates and private donors to provide quality STEM education to students in the most remote parts of Ghana. The current state of STEM education in Ghana is concerning, with only 39% of the 127,502 students admitted to public universities in the 2012/2013 academic year enrolling in science-related programs. This is far short of the 60% mandatory science-related admissions policy set by the Ministry of Education, according to National Council for Tertiary Education data.

Additionally, the Ghana government expenditure per primary student as a percentage of GDP per capita between 2007 and 2013 averaged only 14.2%, with the lowest being in 2013.

This level of investment is inadequate for a developing nation like Ghana. At CEID STEM Foundation, we aim to bridge this gap and provide opportunities for all Ghanaian children to access high-quality STEM education.

The CSF provides vital support to primary and secondary educational institutions in STEM education. This includes training a new generation of science teachers, offering consulting and professional development services, and assisting with grant writing. With a strong passion and focus on enabling the success of STEM and CTE (Career and Technical Education) programs, the CSF provides the necessary technical resources for Ghana's primary and secondary education levels.

Ghana's technological growth and economic development will suffer without a long-term strategic plan to address these gaps. The CSF aims to stimulate and engage students thinking by integrating STEM experiences throughout classroom learning. More students must be exposed to engaging STEM learning activities, computational science experiences, and courses to achieve this. These developmentally appropriate and engaging activities maximize students learning in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, combining the STEM disciplines with materials and situations that are interesting and meaningful to them.

CEID STEM Agenda:

  • Provide coordinated, sustained interventions to develop the abilities of the most talented students in STEM.

  • Foster a supportive and sustainable STEM ecosystem that encourages excellence and innovation in all students.

  • Improve the access and availability of effective basic formal and informal educational programs to meet the needs of future STEM innovators.

  • Focus on STEM, Computer Science, Art, and Design, as well as the combination of STEM and Project-Based Learning.
